Delivered to your Door.

Free UK Delivery

Your Potatoes to Eat will be sent on a 48 hour courier.  However, we work quite rurally and we have an early pick up.  We need to have orders in the day beforeto be able to get the order together before our courier arrives.  Orders received in the morning will not be dispatched until the following working day.   We cannot delay delivery due to storage, so please put in ASAP at checkout.

For the vast majority of orders, we do not charge a surcharge for Scottish Highlands and Islands and other remote areas.  However, we reserve the right to contact you if we can't get a viable rate. Unfortunately, for large or extremely remote orders, it is likely that we will need to pass on some haulage charge.

If you wish to pick up we offer a 15% discount.  By default, this option will only appear for local postcodes.  If yours doesn’t appear, use our postcode DD3 0QN in the “Deliver to Address”.    You need to select local pick up and also put code Pickup in the coupon box.  Also to help us, put “pick up” in the “deliver to address”.  We will contact you when your order is ready. We operate on a working farm with machinery, vehicles and livestock and so please keep children and pets inside your car when picking up. This is only available for orders up to £50 – if you wish to pick up a larger order, please contact us prior to ordering.

If we get a parcel returned to us due to wrong details we will charge you postage to re-send.  Please check the details on your confirmation note and inform us immediately of any mistakes.  Small typos are easy to do!

Mixed order of seed potatoes and Potatoes to eat is welcome, as long as they are to be dispatched immediately (note seed potatoes will not be ready until mid-December).

If you would like to order both seed potatoes and potatoes to eat to arrive at different times, please do two separate orders.

Wholesale welcome - please contact us.

Growing late season potatoes

How to grow potatoes indoors for Christmas harvests

  1. Use a container at least 30cm (1ft) deep and wide, with drainage holes in the base
  2. Add a layer of potting compost or garden soil mixed with garden compost or well-rotted manure. A layer 10cm (4in) thick is sufficient for 30cm (1ft) deep pots, but larger containers can be half-filled.
  3. Plant one to three tubers per pot, each with about 30cm (1ft) of space, and cover with 15cm (6in) of compost or soil.
  4. As the foliage develops, earth up the potatoes with further compost or soil until the container is full to within 5cm (2in) of the top. Leave a lip to aid watering.
  5. Keep well-watered and feed with a general-purpose liquid fertiliser.
  6. Ensure the greenhouse remains frost-free as the season progresses, as potato foliage would be damaged by frost.
  7. The foliage will yellow and die down in late autumn and can then be removed and composted.
  8. Tubers can be left in their pots in compost (kept fairly dry) until needed at Christmas.

How to grow potatoes outdoors for Christmas harvests

  1. Follow general instructions for growing potatoes, including planting them in a trench and earthing them up as they begin to grow.
  2. Take measures to protect against potato blight and slugs.
  3. Once foliage dies down in September or October, remove and compost it.
  4. On light soils in a sheltered garden, piling some earth up over the row where you know the potatoes are and covering it with straw to insulate tubers may be sufficient protection to store them in the ground until Christmas.
  5. In cold areas, or where soils are wet and heavy, it is better to lift tubers by the end of October and re-bury them in coarse sand or soil in a frost-free place (such as a garden shed) until you need them.
  6. Lifting and storing potatoes in the fridge, or in bags in a cool shed, is possible but will cause the skins to harden and the desirable, delicate ‘new-potato’ flavour and texture will be lost.

Problems

  • Potatoes are prone to scab and a number of rots but this can usually be avoided when they are grown in fresh compost in containers
  • Slugs and snails can damage foliage, stems and tubers underground
  • Potatoes grown outside in summer and autumn are especially prone to potato blight. Those in containers indoors are not usually at risk
  • Keep an eye on the weather forecasts as early frosts will blacken foliage and weaken plants; fleece protection may be needed for outdoor crops.

So what are YOU having with your potatoes this year? Side dish of turkey, ham or nut roast? Let the potatoes take centre stage.

*Grown by supplier

90% of seed potatoes sold by Potato House are our own production. Each year, a few varieties are sourced from other local growers to complete our range. The potatoes are all certified seed and are of the same high quality that the home-grown ones are. This variety has been bought in for 2024.

We abide by the rules set in The Seed Potatoes (Scotland) Regulations 2015, as do all our trusted suppliers.

Potatoes to Eat range will change throughout the season - please join our newsletter (tick box Potatoes to Eat) for up-to-date information or bookmark here and check back.  Although we grow over 90 varieties this is mainly for seed potatoes and not all our varieties will be available in our To Eat range.  Let us know what you would like to see in this range - we welcome your feedback on this new venture.

We aim to have potatoes 9 months of the year for you and are looking to extend this for 2023-24

If a variety has COMING SOON we intend on having this for you in this season.  We have to plan storage and washing facilities and can't give a certain date until a few days before we have it for you. We will have better plans in the future once we get into a routine.

If a product has DELAY TO REBAG on it, it means that we need to check stock, and wash and re-bag if we still have some left.  This is not a guarantee that we do have more in stock.  We have to check.

If a product has SOLD OUT for 2024, it really does mean sold out.

Seed Potatoes Stock Information

Here at Potato House, we net and bag up most of our seed potatoes.   If a variety is out of stock this could be temporary or indeed we could well be out of stock for the season.  There could be a delay from our store to the web as we communicate this information.

We have four different stock message labels on our seed potatoes.  These will vary as the season progresses.

If a product has COMING SOON it means we are still assessing quality/quantity from our harvest, or that we are in the process of buying this variety from our trusted growers.  We are 99% sure that this variety will be for sale before Christmas, but it isn't listed until we know that it has passed all relevant inspections.

If a product has DELAY TO REBAG on it, it means that we need to check stock and re-bag if we still have some left.  This is not a guarantee that we do have more in stock.  We have to check. In some circumstances a variety can go back on for sale - it will depend on the final bagging up for customers over the next few weeks. If you go on the stock alert you will be notified either later in this season, or for next season.

If a product has SOLD OUT, it really does mean sold out. Please go on the stock alert for the following year and we will let you know when we have it for sale again.

If a product has UNAVAILABLE it means that we have had this variety in recent years but are not able to supply it for this season.  We simply do not have the room to grow every variety each year and so if you are looking for a variety that you bought from us before and we now don’t stock it, we may grow it again in the future.  We also have been affected by Brexit as we are now prohibited to sell seed Potatoes to EU AND NI.  We sold 40% of our harvest to EU and some varieties are sadly now unviable without this market.  Occasionally there is a crop failure.

If a PACK SIZE has sold out (eg there are 6 tuber nets available, but no 1 kg nets) this will be getting rebagged, if we have more of that variety left.

Potato House grows around 90 varieties and some are in small quantities and sell out quickly.  We leave these products on our web and if you are looking for a particular variety, we invite you to sign up for the stock alert found on each variety or to join our mailing list.  When we harvest in the autumn and know quantities we then will open our web up for pre-orders and let our mailing list know about this.

Some varieties are grown to order for customers and we will have most of the crop sold but will perhaps have some available once we do the final bagging for our customers therefore new varieties may sometimes appear mid-season.
