Heritage
- These older varieties date from pre 1950 and remind us of “what a potato should taste like” perhaps not as high yielding as modern varieties but have stood the test of time for a reason.
  In 2010 we decided to extend our variety list of heritage and speciality seed potato varieties which have long histories and exclusive characteristics. We have developed a specialist niche in growing and supplying a wide selection of top quality heritage and speciality seed potatoes.
  We are now market leaders in this area and are proud to say that some varieties have been brought back from obscurity such as Lumpers.

Organic
- - - It is over twenty years now since Andrew Skea started Skea Organics and registered as an organic seed potato grower and supplier. Skea Organics is now a highly recognised name in the potato industry. Skea Organics is the lead grower and supplier of organic seed potatoes to farmers throughout UK and further afield and is our original company. We are certified by the Soil Association.
      Only about a third of our varieties are organic, but this translates to the vast majority of our harvest and sales. Organic varieties are clearly labelled from web through to labels and invoices.

Blight Resistant
Maturity
- - - First early or ‘new’ potatoes are so-called because they are the earliest to crop. They take 10-12 weeks to mature.
  - - Second early potatoes take 14-16 weeks to mature
  - - Early Main crop will mature in about 15 – 20 weeks. Main Crop give a heavier crop than the Earlies.
  - - Maincrops take 16-22 weeks to mature. These will store for much longer than earlies
Potato Type
- - - From garden to plate. How you like to eat your potatoes can determine what you grow.
      The three types are Floury, Waxy and smooth. As a general rule, most potatoes tend to fall into one of two categories; floury or waxy. Waxy potatoes hold their shape and have a firm bite, so they’re great for salads or simply boiled and dressed with butter. Floury potatoes, on the other hand, fluff up when they’re cooked, making them perfect for chips, roast potatoes or baking. But there are varieties that fall in the centre, holding both waxy and firm qualities and these are defined as smooth. These make great all-rounders, and tend to have the creamy consistency needed for a smooth mash.
- - - These potatoes have a fluffy middle when cooked. They are not only great for family favourites such as ruffled up roasties but also tasty jackets or chunky chips.
  - - They hold their shape when boiled or cooked in a sauce such as dauphinoise or a hot pot. Try them boiled or as wedges.
  - - Taste great simply prepared in their skins. ‘Salad’ potatoes are firm to the bite and are great for a quick, easy and healthier dish. Taste delicious boiled, steamed or roasted whole in their skins.
Potato Colour
- - - We are renowned for having an array of coloured seed potatoes! The purples, the pinks and the blues! There are also potatoes where the flesh is coloured. This is always a talking point – whether it is toddlers or friends round for a meal – everyone is impressed. The toddlers get told that the blue mash has super powers and the adults will check if blue potatoes have super powers! Nutritional values are the same although there are some studies which indicate that a range of food colours is better for you. We do, of course, have white skin and flesh seed potatoes.

I hadn't used Potato House before, having used another supplier... previously. I contacted 3 separate suppliers in early December, including Potato House, asking some advice. All 3 responded but I was particularly impressed by the friendliness and response time from Amy at Potato House, especially as it was December and they would have been very busy with orders. Nothing seemed too much trouble. I was also impressed by the range of seed potatoes Potato House had on their easy to navigate website.I took advantage of Potato House's deal that allowed me to purchase 6 tubers of 5 different varieties for a discounted price. I liked this as it allows me to try out several varieties but small amounts of each. Several other suppliers only sold in 1 or 2 kg bags which limits choice of variety.One other factor for choosing Potato House was the fact I could delay delivery and select the week I wanted them to be sent. I liked this as I could box off the order early and get full choice of variety but with the knowledge that Potato House could store the seed potatoes and then delivery them around the time when they needed chitting.My seed potatoes arrived from Potato House this last week and the quality is fantastic. It is worth remembering that around the time my order was due for processing and dispatch, eastern Scotland was experiencing temperatures as low as -23C in some parts and copious amounts of snow (all that in a global pandemic with its necessary restrictions!). Despite this, my order still arrived and it speaks volumes for all the staff at Potato House that they continued to fulfill orders so efficiently in such challenging circumstances. I even ended up getting a few more of one variety than I expected!I will definitely use Potato House again for my seed potatoes and I cannot recommend them highly enough.read more

We used some of their seed potatoes for a family tattie growing... competition. 3 generations took part and it was a great way to get youngsters interested in growing their own as they are very easy to grow. Potato House give excellent customer service and are on hand to answer any questions about varieties to use/growing conditions/harvesting however silly you may feel the question is. Amazing choice - the pictures on the web are a work of art. Phoned to get... advice on the varieties to buy as a first time grower. They could not have been more helpful for a small order. I ended up phoning 3 times as I needed advice on growing and nothing was too much trouble. The service was top class. To find a family business who are proud of their products is always good. Potatoes delivered in top condition in 4 days (large companies were quoting over two weeks!). We have ordered both seed potatoes and eating potatoes from Potato House.... Both were in great condition and delivered promptly. The sack of eating potatoes we bought has lasted really well without the tatties going green, and they are delicious. Was recommended Potato House on a Facebook veg growing group, I called to... get some advice before ordering as it's my first time growing potatoes, I spoke to a really lovely lady and we had a really nice chat about the different varieties and their all round uses and some more specific varieties for roasting, baking and chipping. I ordered Kerrs Pink, Arran Victory and Shetland Black. Arrived within a week of ordering which was great, even with the current postal delays.
